Advice for Recommendations

If you would like me to write you a letter of recommendation:

  • Read and follow Gary King’s advice.
  • Give me as much advance notice before the recommendation due date as possible.
  • If you would like me to send letters directly to several destinations, please create a spreadsheet of the destinations (schools you are applying to, e.g.) with the following structure, including the exact column names below:
institution instShort deadline title fname lname dept position subfield address1 address2 (etc.) city state zip
the University of My State UMS 2019-12-05 Dr. Richard Sanders Department of Political Science Ph.D. program political science Graduate Admissions Committee 123 Hello Way Frederick MD 21701
State University College State UC 2019-12-06 Prof. Frank Bonner Political Science Department master’s program public policy Graduate Admissions Committee 348 LB Lane Peoria IL 63112
  • If there is no specific person to send the letter to, use Admissions as the title and Committee as the last name.
  • If the ZIP code begins with a zero (e.g., 02138), omit the leading zero (e.g., 2138).
